Science of Masses
Taking modernist architecture as a starting point Hibbs’ work is an investigation into the construction of space in painting. Acknowledging the artificial nature of spatial depiction the work actively undermines both depth and perspective by drawing attention to the two dimensionality of painting. Dividing and fluctuating between abstraction and representation the work neither inhabits one space or the other, but an interesting hybrid space - the space between.

Hibbs’ working process falls into two parts: the first being studies on paper, which form the basis for the final paintings. Working directly onto photographic images with acrylic paint, the studies on paper employ a visual, spatial game-playing. The architectural image becomes a ‘host’ to Hibbs’ overlaying of lines, trajectories, and simple planes. By creating a geometric network he establishes a symbiotic/parasitic relationship with the host image. This intervention consciously quotes both abstract painting and the formal language of modernist architecture.

Paintings form the second part of Hibbs’ working practice, where the whole image becomes democratised by its translation into paint. The differences between the representational (photographic) spaces and the non-representational (geometric) spaces become more enigmatic. This loss of a unified perspective and the arrival of disconcerting spatial relationships provoke questions about what is ‘real space’ and what is ‘invented space’ within the language of painting.
